What is sleep apnea?
One of the most missed health problems in the US.
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a condition in which the upper airway repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep, interrupting breathing for seconds at a time and pulling you briefly out of deep sleep, often hundreds of times a night without your knowing it.
Most moderate-to-severe cases are never diagnosed, because the symptoms (snoring, tiredness, poor concentration) are easy to attribute to stress, age or a busy schedule.
It matters well beyond feeling tired. Untreated OSA is consistently linked to:
Heart - high blood pressure, atrial fibrillation and other irregular rhythms, and increased cardiovascular risk
Brain - higher stroke risk, and measurable effects on memory and concentration
Metabolism - a strong two-way relationship with type 2 diabetes and blood sugar control
Safety - daytime sleepiness raises the risk of motor vehicle accidents
Rates of heart disease and type 2 diabetes in the Atlanta area are high enough that catching sleep apnea early is worth doing rather than waiting.

Symptoms
Signs of OSA that go beyond snoring.
Snoring is the symptom people associate with sleep apnea, but it is rarely what leads to the diagnosis — daytime tiredness that sleep does not fix, morning headaches and trouble concentrating are more telling, and plenty of people with OSA do not snore loudly at all.

Diagnosis
Testing that happens in your own bed.
A home sleep apnea test is a small device you wear for one night in your own bed. It records airflow, blood oxygen saturation, breathing effort and body position, and a board-certified pulmonologist scores the recording and reviews the results with you.
Some patients are better served by an in-lab study — usually when another sleep disorder is suspected alongside OSA, when heart or lung disease complicates the picture, or when a home test is negative but symptoms persist. Medimprove arranges in-lab studies when they are the right test.

Treatment options
Five treatment options, matched to you.
Sleep apnea treatment is chosen from how severe your OSA is, what your airway anatomy looks like, and what you can realistically use every night. CPAP is the most effective starting point for moderate-to-severe OSA, but oral appliances, positional therapy, hypoglossal nerve stimulation and surgery are all appropriate for particular patients.
