What is pulmonary fibrosis?
Scarring that makes the lungs stiffer.
Pulmonary fibrosis is scarring of the lung tissue that makes the lungs stiffer and makes it harder for oxygen to pass into the blood. It is one of a group of conditions called interstitial lung diseases (ILD), which can be linked to autoimmune disease, environmental or workplace exposures or certain medications, or have no identifiable cause.
Because symptoms such as breathlessness and a dry cough develop gradually, pulmonary fibrosis is often mistaken for ageing or being out of shape. Accurate diagnosis relies on high-resolution CT alongside lung function testing.
Some forms of pulmonary fibrosis progress over time, so regular measurement matters: repeat testing shows whether the condition is stable or changing, and whether treatment should change with it.

Symptoms
Signs of pulmonary fibrosis.
The most common signs are shortness of breath that slowly worsens with activity and a persistent dry cough; some people also notice fatigue or widening, rounded fingertips.

Diagnosis
Measured, then tracked over time.
Pulmonary fibrosis is assessed with high-resolution CT and lung function testing (particularly DLCO, which measures how well oxygen crosses into the blood) and Medimprove repeats these measurements at set intervals to track change.
Six-minute walk testing adds a picture of how your oxygen level holds up with activity.
