What is COPD?

A long-term lung condition you can manage better when it’s measured.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a long-term lung condition in which the airways narrow and the air sacs lose their elasticity, making it harder to breathe out fully. It includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis, and is most often linked to smoking or long-term exposure to lung irritants.

COPD usually develops slowly, so early breathlessness is easy to put down to age or fitness. The diagnosis is confirmed with spirometry, and a fuller set of tests shows how the disease is affecting each part of the lung.

Lung damage from COPD can’t be reversed, but treatment can ease symptoms, reduce flare-ups and help you stay active.

Diagnosis

Testing that maps your lungs.

COPD is confirmed with spirometry, and Medimprove adds lung volumes, DLCO and quantitative CT imaging to show how much of the lung is affected and where (all on-site, usually in a single visit).

Knowing whether airflow limitation, air trapping or reduced gas transfer is driving your symptoms helps your pulmonologist choose the right treatment and track change over time.
